SEO vs. AEO vs. GEO: What's the Difference?
Three acronyms, one foundation. Here is what SEO, AEO, and GEO each mean, and why most of the work behind them is shared.
Published by Coco Design

SEO, AEO, and GEO describe three overlapping ways of being found online: ranking in traditional search results, being used as a direct answer, and being mentioned inside AI-generated responses. They are not competing strategies, and most of the work behind them is shared.
The short comparison
| SEO | AEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Goal | Traditional search visibility | Answer-oriented visibility | Generative AI visibility |
| Where it shows up | Google and Bing results pages | Featured snippets, voice answers, direct answers | AI-generated responses in ChatGPT, AI Overviews, Perplexity |
| How success is measured | Rankings, impressions, clicks | Answers captured, exposure above the results | Mentions, citations, recommendations |
SEO: search engine optimization
SEO is the work of earning a position in a list of search results. It covers technical health, site structure, page speed, keyword-aligned content, internal linking, and links from other sites. The payoff is a click from someone scanning the results.
AEO: answer engine optimization
AEO is the work of making a page usable as the answer itself. Questions become headings, the first sentence of every answer is complete on its own, facts are stated plainly, and structured data tells a machine what kind of content it is looking at. The payoff is being the text a search engine or assistant reads back to the user.
GEO: generative engine optimization
GEO is the work of shaping how AI systems describe and recommend your business. It extends past your own site to reviews, directories, press coverage, and any other place a model might learn who you are. The payoff is being named when someone asks an assistant for a recommendation.
Why they overlap more than they compete
All three depend on the same foundation: content a machine can reach, content that is specific enough to be useful, and facts that agree with each other everywhere they appear. A page rewritten so its opening sentences answer clearly will also perform better in traditional search, because clarity and structure were always ranking-friendly. Treating SEO, AEO, and GEO as three separate budgets usually means paying three times for overlapping work.
The practical order is simple. Get the SEO fundamentals right, write in an answer-first style, keep your business facts consistent across the web, and then measure whether AI assistants are citing you.
